Diagnosing Cooling Systems

Compared to the majority of the service techs in our industry, airheads have a distinct advantage when it comes to diagnosing cooling systems. The general idea that the system is "working" means it's typically only producing 60% or less of the equipment rated BTU removal capacity. You can do far better than that.

Quick Tests
The quick tests needed to make an initial diagnosis of a cooling system's performance are all included in NCI's CoolMaxx Report. By testing a system's static pressure and temperature change, you can plot fan airflow, (consider using the NCI Generic Fan Tables) and then calculate the delivered BTU of the system. Then simply divide the delivered BTU into the equipment rated BTU to rate or grade the performance of the system.

200 Over 130
Static pressure, when compared to blood pressure is an effective way to help your customers understand system defects. Like all other air properties, static pressure is invisible and can only be detected through measurement.
